Facebook could now lose its place as America's 2nd-biggest website

Facebook vs YouTube

After a couple of difficult weeks Facebook is threatened to be superseded by YouTube, whose website is about to take Facebook’s placeholder as the second-biggest website in the US. Research shows that the amount of monthly visits from just two years ago has drastically dropped according to the market-research firm, SimilarWeb. The variance of users is being reporting as a drop of almost 4 billion. Although there is a dramatic shift in the amount of people logging onto Facebook there is something to be said about it’s growing associated websites that are directing these users toward the Facebook app, Instagram, and Messenger.

Facebook has had the biggest one day loss of $100 billion-plus in the stock market history. It has also had to ban coordinated efforts of those trying to influence the US politics. This includes as many as 32 pages and accounts. To top off the unfortunate events that Facebook is experiencing, it is more then likely going to lose its place as the second-biggest website in only a matter of time. This change is being described as a “paradigm shift,” according to SimilarWeb’s Stephan Kraus. Much of the traffic that Facebook has been receiving for so long is going to switch over to YouTube, making YouTube the runner up to Google. This shift is predicted to happen within the next two or three months.

In July there was evidence to suggest that Facebook’s popularity was dwindling when it was revealed that there was an absence of 241 million users both the US and Canada. A month previous to that, it was noted that Facebook had lost 376 million users in Europe. With this said these losses could be viewed in another perspective when checking Facebook’s other networks like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Facebook is essentially trading these users to grow it’s adjacent websites. It can also be known that despite the lower amount of users visiting Facebook’s main site, the mobile app is becoming increasingly more popular with each passing day. Although losing traffic is never the goal for any website, for Facebook this isn’t a total loss, because it is also displaying an act of growth throughout multiple platforms.

YouTube has become the main stage when it comes to user preference for viewing video. It has become the “primary entertainment/information source for the younger generation,” according to SimilarWeb. Google on the other hand is still ranking as the biggest website in the US overall. It comes in with a whopping 15.2 billion users. Neither Facebook or YouTube can touch those numbers and won’t be able to anytime in the foreseen future.

An extra fascinating fact to highlight is the growing quantity of users on Amazon. For a long time Yahoo has been the superior website to Amazon, but the amount of those on Amazon to those on Yahoo has recently been higher, likely due to Prime Day. If these numbers stay on trend it won’t be long until Amazon is continuously in front of Yahoo.
