How to Use Social Media to Promote Local Events (Without Feeling Spammy)

Here’s some ways you can help promote your event on social media.

Promoting a local event on social media can be tricky. You want to get the word out, but you don’t want to overwhelm your audience with constant reminders. The key is to strike a balance between promotion and engagement.

Create a Content Plan

Instead of posting the same event details over and over, mix up your content. Share behind-the-scenes prep, highlight vendors or sponsors, post countdown reminders, and create engaging polls or questions related to the event.

Use a Variety of Formats

Different people engage with different types of content. Mix up your posts with images, videos, event graphics, and even live streams. Short-form videos on platforms like Instagram Reels or TikTok can grab attention, while Facebook events help keep attendees updated.

Engage With Your Audience

Don’t just post—interact! Respond to comments, answer questions, and encourage user-generated content. Ask your followers to share why they’re excited about the event or to tag friends who might be interested.

Leverage Local Groups and/or Influencers

Post in community Facebook groups, collaborate with local influencers, and ask businesses to share your event. This expands your reach beyond your own followers.

Use Hashtags and Location Tags

Relevant hashtags and location tags make your posts discoverable. Use a mix of popular local hashtags and event-specific ones to increase visibility.

Don’t Overdo It

Avoid bombarding your audience with too many posts. A well-spaced schedule—such as a post every few days leading up to the event—keeps interest high without feeling spammy.

By diversifying your content, engaging authentically, and leveraging local connections, you can promote your event effectively without overwhelming your audience. Happy posting!
